One of the most common questions from anyone thinking of buying a towable food trailer is simple: "What size is right for me?" The choice isn't just about space — it affects cost, the menu you can offer, and even the parking spot you'll need.

What the Law Actually Says About Size

You'll often come across the "rule" that a food trailer must be 5 to 10 m² — but this applies with significant conditions that are frequently left out. That limit comes from Presidential Decree 254/2005 and specifically concerns itinerant or stationary trading in public spaces (Law 4849/2021) — not installation on private premises, where, according to the most recent Joint Ministerial Decision 61788/2026, we did not find a corresponding floor-area restriction.

In practice, this means the size you choose is determined mainly by where your food trailer will operate and your practical needs — not by a single legal limit that applies to every case.

How to Read the Sizes

In the market, towable food trailers are usually described by their length in meters (e.g. "a 4-meter food trailer" or "a 5-meter food trailer"). This length can refer to either the outer or the inner dimensions of the work cabin — always ask which one, since the difference can be several centimeters. Which Size Fits Which Use

Size	Ideal For
Small (~3-3.5m)	A simple menu with few items — coffee, juices, snacks. 1-2 staff. Lower purchase and transport cost.
Medium (~4m)	A fuller menu (souvlaki, burgers, hot/cold drinks) with room for extra equipment such as refrigerators, a fryer, a griddle.
Large (~5-7m)	Businesses with multiple sales points, a wider product range, or use at events/festivals where you need more work and storage space.

Practical Points Often Forgotten

• Maneuvering space: a larger food trailer needs more room to park and maneuver — check the available space before choosing a size.
• Number of axles: larger models usually have 2 axles instead of 1, which affects how you tow them (the driving license required depends on gross weight, plus insurance).

• Future expansion: if you plan to grow your menu in 1-2 years, it may be worth investing in a slightly larger size from the start rather than changing vehicles later.
